THIS is how you pull off a sequel!

Most sequels, even in the 1980's, to slasher movies rely on what the original lacked: Gore. It's a must-have for sequels, you just gotta have buckets of blood and very little story. The first "Nightmare On Elm Street" that Wes Craven directed was a very unique horror film.It was violent, but it also had a creepy concept to it, not to mention the unforgettabley haunting Freddy Krueger character. After the 6th and dreadful installment that promised us the eternal death or Krueger, New Line Cinemas decided that there's still a buck to squeeze out of the fans.Wes Craven finally came back to direct the 7th installment and it was the right thing to do.Take a director of a classic horror movie, have him do a sequel with a new and original plot, and you have a good sequel in addition to a rather very good movie by itself.Craven himself re-invented the horror genre in 1984, and it seems as if though he's created one with this movie, a horror movie within a horror movie.

In "New Nightmare", The whole Freddy Krueger franchise has been recognized as an actual franchise, so we instead get a movie that revolves around the actors and crew involved with the previous 6 films.Heather Langenkamp, the actress who played as Nancy in the 1st and 3rd film, stars as herself with a successful actress who mostly does TV shows instead of movies.Things suddenly start to spiral out of control for her, but mostly for her son Dylan. It seems as if though the "Nightmare" franchise has awoken an evil force in the form of an actual Freddy Krueger, and his only goal is cause mayhem on Heather and her son.It seems as if though the only way to stop Freddy is to make another sequel, carrying on his legend, but that demonic figure with knives for fingers won't stop at getting in her way from protecting herself and Dylan.

The best aspect of "New Nightmare" is that it's more than a slasher film, it's a film that centers on the human mind and psychosis, and even how horror movies affect the lives of the people who made them in the first place. It's also a slasher movie that actually takes itself seriously, especialy the Freddy Krueger character. He does have an amusing one-liner or two here and there, but he's more menacing here than he is funny, and that's a great thing that works here! The acting from everyone here is very good, and the special effects are top-notch, in addition to the best make-up effects used to make actor Robert Englund look like the sinister foe who invades your dreams. It's easy to say that Wes Craven's "New Nightmare" is one of the best installments in the franchise, all thanks to a wonderfully creative story and acting you don't usually get in a slasher sequel.Do yourself a favor and watch the original THEN skip the sequels and watch this one.

Grade: B+
