Take the "Saw" movies, put em' in a house, and this is what you'll end up with.

From the twisted and deranged minds behind "Saw IV, V, and VI" comes "The Collector", a grisly slasher film that's similar to the "Saw" franchise in a lot of ways. The first thing that "Saw" fans will notice what's similar with this movie is the gory violence the movie throws into the viewer's face. While not as memorably violent as "Saw 3D", it is more gory than the original "Saw" and some of it's sequels. The second thing is the traps. While not as complex as the reverse bear trap seen in the first "Saw" movie or the garage trap seen in "Saw 3D", the fact that most of the elaborate traps are simple is what makes the film effective and simple. While gore and traps doesn't sound like a big similarity between this and "Saw", the atmosphere and tone remained the same. The movie shows no sympathy for it's victims and just kills them off one by one in grisly and creative ways, just like the "Saw" movies. The story is also kept simple enough for fans of this type of stuff, so they don't have to worry about too much talking between scenes of violence and suspense.

The main character is Arkin, a man whose plan is to break into a house and steal a valuable gem that will provide enough money for his wife to pay back the loan sharks she owed money to.It sounds like a pitch perfect plan, but things go from complicated to worse when Arkin hears somebody open the back door.It turns out that the person inside of the house is a killer known as the collector. Why is he called that? Simple, he collects people. He always keeps someone alive and puts them in a box to use as bait.He kills everyone else he's not interested in.As he tries to sneak past his traps, ranging from bear traps to fish hooks, he realizes that there's no escape. The doors are locked and to make things even worse for him, he hears someone scream in the basement. Will he go back to rescue the owners of the house he broke into or will he try to escape?

There's always a turn at every corner of the movie.Wether it's the older daughter of the family and her boyfriend entering the house unaware of what's going on or a police officer getting his throat ripped out by a dog, "The Collector" knows how to surprise with it's turns and shock with it's brutal and gruesome violence.Speaking of violence, this is NOT a movie for the squeamish, and I'm talking about really squeamish people. The scene where Arkin gets his hand stuck between 2 blades and trying to pull it out was pretty intense.

At 90 minutes long, "The Collector" knows how to fit everything in without feeling too long or too short. The traps are elaborate and end with gruesome results, including my favorite scene that involved a man falling to his death by bear traps. While not as creative or gory as "Saw 3D", "The Collector" is a movie that gorehounds should definetly check out.Anyone excited for "The Collector 2"?

Grade: B+
