Repo! The Genetic Opera

Horror + Music + Paris Hilton= Bad idea

Director Darren Lynn Bousman, the director of Saw II, III, and IV, has finally reached a new low in his career as a director."Repo! The Genetic Opera" is a violent but very dull movie that tries to appeal to the target audience by mixing horror and musical together.I like the horror genre and I don't have anything wrong with musicals, but this movie fails to deliver on both levels. There's a lot of singing in this movie, too much for me anyway. There are a total of 58 songs in this movie and it's only 98 minutes long.I wouldn't have a problem with the movie if there wasn't songs being played every 5 seconds. When one song is over, another comes in.When that song is finished, another one takes it's place in the next 5 seconds. It's just 98 minutes of 1 song after another.I just couldn't handle it.In addition to the annoying surplus of songs, there's also some memorable actors wasted.Nobody gives a crap about Paris Hilton, but she accepted her role in this movie anyway and the result is a performance I would like to erase from my mind.Paul Sorvino (Paulie from "Goodfellas") gives the movie's best performance and is probably one of the best singers in it.Why is Bill Moseley from "The Devil's Rejects" in this? See what I mean by a wasted cast?

The movie takes place in the late future where organ failures are sweeping the nation.A company called Geneco comes along and supplies artificial organs for anyone who needs them.People who can't afford them are giving time to make enough money to pay them.If they can't make the dues, Geneco sends the Repo Man to come after them and steal what the customer signed for.

That's the concept of the movie, not the story. There really is no story to be told here, since almost every friggin minute of the movie is someone singing their bloody lungs out untill they realize that the whole movie is a failure. It's a bigger shame for the director than any of the cast members.I like Darren Lynn Bousman as a director and I always will, but every director has their ups and downs, and this movie is a HUGE down for him.I must still give him credit for giving us some good "Saw" sequels, I just hope that he actually knows what he's doing next time for his next feature.

Grade: D
