28 Weeks Later

The original is superior, but who cares?
Everyone who loved "28 Days Later" like I did will probably expect the sequel to be either as good or maybe even better.I saw "28 Weeks Later" before I saw the original and there's no reason to view the first film before seeing the sequel. My thoughts? Despite the somewhat slow pace, I thought this was a pretty well-acted and directed zombie movie that managed to give us believable characters and a story that isn't boring. There really isn't as much story as the first, but it still holds your attention. The zombies are interesting characters as well.Only these aren't your average zombies. You usually think of zombies as slow and mindless.Let's just say that these are not the zombies you've seen in "Night of the Living Dead".They're pretty much like the zombies in the first movie except that they're faster and more vicious than any other zombies you've probably ever seen.If there's anything at all in this movie that's improved over the first, it's the gore. There's a LOT of gore in this movie.I'm talking about zombies gouging out people's eyes and helicopter blades slicing through a whole pack of zombies with lots of bloodshed and flying limbs as one of the few results. Now for the plot.
The movie takes place 28 weeks after a family is attacked by the rabid crazies.Don, the only one who survives the attack, manages to stay alive long enough for the infected to starve to death. The military then comes in to rid Britain of the infected bodies and it isn't long before reconstruction begins.Don meets up with his 2 children and lies to them about their mother's demise. He told them that the infected killed her and there was nothing to do about it.What really happened was Don left his wife to the infected while he sprinted his lying a*s off and escaped. He soon makes a terrifying discovery: His wife is still alive. She's been bitten but she's a carrier of the virus instead of instantly turning into one of them.He kisses her, and her saliva infects Don, turning him into an infected.Soon the virus spreads and now it's "28 Days Later" all over again.
There's little story to the movie but the characters are pretty much the movie's saving grace. The zombies are also entertaining with their vicious and violent personalities. There's a "28 Months Later" in development right now and will be released in 2011.With my enthusiasm for the first 2 movies, there's pretty much nothing else to say except that I'm looking forward to seeing it.
Grade: B
