The Last Airbender
December 12, 2010
I can already see a sequel in the works, God help us and let there be a new director.
M. Night Shyamalan made his big career start with "The Sixth Sense" in 1999 and scored another successful hit with "Signs" in 2002.After that, his movies started to get less fame than his already popular movies."The Village" received mixed reviews, "Lady In The Water" didn't do very good, and a lot of people disliked "The Happening".Is this what Shyamalam is destined to do, turn popular cartoons into live-action movies? I bet he never thought that doing so would be the biggest mistake of his career.A 6% on the Rotten Tomatoes scale and a 4.5/10 rating on IMDB pretty much sums up his ability to defecate on popular shows on Nickelodeon.I'll admit one thing, "The Last Airbender" wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be.No way in Hell is this a good movie, but I didn't hate it, and the fact that it's a step up from terrible is something of a miracle. In order to have a good movie with good special effects, you need a story with characters that are interesting enough to carry out all the way until the end.The problem here is that Shyamalan cares more about wowing the audience with cool special effects instead of giving a solid story or interesting people.I didn't care for one person in this movie, not one.I didn't care much for the cartoon, but even the series had better people than the ones in this jumbled web of a movie.Shyamalan can't even give a good story.I know what the movie is based off of, but there was no spark in the events that were supposed to change whatever was going to happen throughout the rest of the movie.Add in some bad acting and sloppy dialog and you get a movie that you knew could've and should've been better. If there's anything to give credit to, it's the hot looking princess introduced an hour into the movie and the special effects. They don't rank up to "Avatar", but at least they don't go too far over-the-top like Michael Bay did with "Transformers", which I had no problem with because of the fact that at least Michael Bay can add some decent people with good special effects and make the movie a little funny. It's better off to forget "The Last Airbender" instead of remembering it as the monstrosity that destroyed a man's career as a film-maker.What's there to remember about this movie that's even worth looking back at? Let's just pop in the DVD of "Signs" and remember the good ol' days when Shyamalan could make good movies.Question : What in God's name is Dev Patel from "Slumdog Millionaire" doing in this movie? Wanna hear something funny? Dev said in an interview that he didn't like this movie. What a twist! The characters are shallow and dull. What a twist! The movie was directed by M. Night Shayamalen. What a twist!
