Fun for any day, including Monday.
Words cannot describe how much fun and amusement I got out of "Friday".In my opinion, I think it ranks up there with "Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle" for most amusing buddy-stoner comedy.Just like the 2 stoner friends played by Kal Penn and John Cho, the central characters in "Friday" are a non-stop riot thanks to some brilliant writing and outrageous humor.Of course, a lot of the humor is sex related, but these two guys, Ice Cube and Chris Tucker, know how to make it funny. As with Kal Penn being the funniest character in "H&K", I gotta say that the best character in "Friday" is Chris Tucker, who is the most sexually active and idiotic character out of the entire film. Then again, it's a requirement for stoner movies to have a character who doesn't take situations seriously and concentrates on women wearing small clothes while watering plants on the front lawn.Hell, I think Chris Tucker's character, Smokey, is a lot more interesting than Kal Penn's character, Kumar.Maybe it's because of the fact that this movie came about 9 years before the 1st "Harold and Kumar" flick, so it possibly could be said that "Friday" is more original.I also think that the duo played by Ice Cube and Chris Tucker is more interesting than the already likeable Harold and Kumar. It's perfectly fine if you disagree with that last sentence, but you may just be missing out on what a stoner-buddy comedy REALLY is.
Since this is a stoner comedy that takes place mostly on a front porch or the ghetto in general, there's not much story to explain except that it revolves around 2 friends who smoke weed and get into all kinds of shinanagins, a word that most people in the ghetto probably wouldn't use to describe their situation.Even if the plot isn't so aware of itself, it's all about the performances! It's the 2 stoner friends who make this movie work so well, and what a fine duo they make! Ice Cube makes an instantly likeable central character from the very start when he makes himself the biggest bowl of cereal that I've ever seen, and Nia Long, to describe how Cube and Tucker would exclaim it, is DAAAAMMMMMNN fine! I've probably said too much about Nia, but it's all about the idiots, the stoners, the unlikely duo.If Ice Cube was replaced with, oh, Mike Epps, this probably still would've been a fun movie. If Chris Tucker was replaced with anybody else, I would've taken this movie, shred it up, and use it to make a blunt to forget that it even existed.
Grade: B+
