Predators

Adrien Brody is close to being the new Arnold Schwarzenegger.
The original 1987 "Predator" was something of a science-fiction classic. The sequels, not so much.Arnold Schwarzenegger gave us what may have been one of his great performances.A performance that may have made Sigourney Weaver jealous. After "Predator 2" we were given the poorly reviewed "Alien Vs. Predator" and "Alien Vs. Predator Requiem".Those who were disappointed with the mish mash of Alien and Predator will most likely find themselves enjoying "Predators".I know I did. This is the movie fans were hoping it to be.It's not as good as the original, but what sci-fi sequel ever matches it's predecessor? The movie oozes in strong violence and lots of blood, both red and green. This is definetly the most violent of the Predator movies, so people going into this thinking it isn't going to be a really hard-R should look somewhere else. There's also a surprisingly heavy amount of language with 90-95% of it consisting of the F-bomb.What mostly makes "Predators" an effective thriller is the performances.Adrien Brody may not be Schwarzenegger but he makes a great action star nonetheless. Then you get Derek Mears playing the original Predator. He played his role quite effectively as Jason Voorhees in the "Friday the 13th" reboot. He does the same thing here.I personally think the actor who played the Predator in the 1987 original did a more effective job at playing the antagonist, but you can't argue with Derek Mears.I do think the story has improved from commandos battling an evil alien to strangers dropped on a mysterious planet as the main game. The planet is the game reserve and the people are the game. Now that's a story no Predator fan could resist. Some of the dialogue is pretty interesting, including when Laurence Fishburne explains who the predators are and what's been going down on the planet ever since he first arrived. The ending feels a little dragged on but it did hold my attention.Unrated or not, "Predators" will make for a nice buy when it comes on DVD.A solid sequel to a 1987 classic.
Grade: B+
