G.I. Joe: the Rise of Cobra
September 1, 2010
Good enough for a rental
Harry Knowles from Ain't it Cool News said "G.I. Joe: the Rise of Cobra" was awesome. It even says so on the DVD cover.Whatever he was smoking, I'm pretty sure it was some powerful stuff.Awesome? How is this movie awesome? It's definitely not the crap-fest people have been making it out to be, but calling this movie awesome is like calling "District 9" the feel good comedy of the year.It just doesn't make sense how someone could possibly love this movie. It may sound like I'm bashing this movie, but I'm just stunned how you could love a movie like this.Anyway, "Rise of Cobra" was one of the worst reviewed movies of 2009.Not as poorly reviewed as "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen", but it still got a lot of negative feedback.I personally like "Transformers 2" a LOT more than this movie, but that's just me.What made this movie kinda flunk was mainly the characters.I liked Channing Tatum in "Fighting" but he doesn't seem like that much of an action hero here.He just seems like an additional character to a no-brainer action movie. And will Somebody please tell me why Marlon Wayans is in this movie? I want a reasonable answer like "He wanted money" instead of a crappy excuse like "He had the potential to be in an action movie".He isn't necessarily bad here, he's just really unnecessary. He's a good actor when it comes to funny movies. He was great in "Scary Movie" and he was likable in "Scary Movie 2".As far as action movies are concerned, he's just the wrong choice for one.I don't know what the director of "The Mummy" and "Van Helsing" was thinking about when he accepted Marlon as a mostly comical action star.It just doesn't make any sense in my head.If there's anything that makes up for the uninteresting characters, it's the action sequences. We've seen better ones in "Transformers" but these are good ones nonetheless. The best action scene in my book would probably have to be the one that took place in Paris. Now that was fun. It's just a shame to see likable actors in an action movie where they barely feel like action heroes. The story isn't great either. It definitely wasn't boring but the way "Transformers" kinda made up it's own plot as it went along was more interesting than this movie's plot.To cut the crap, I just feel like I have to say that I kinda enjoyed this movie.I was entertained, but only mildly.Still, "G.I. Joe: the Rise of Cobra" is not as bad as you might expect. It's the kind of movie that you can only truly enjoy by hitting the off switch on your brain and enjoy the mindless carnage.
