Shutter Island

People must have been expecting too much.
Martin Scorsese remains as one of the world's most gifted filmmakers, with films ranging from "Goodfellas" to "Casino" and to "The Departed".Leonardo DiCaprio remains as one of my favorite actors to date, with performances ranging from "The Departed" to "Romeo & Juliet".Take these 2 talented people, combine them with a script such as this and you get "Shutter Island".Scorsese has tooken a break from his crime genre and decided to make a suspense movie that's not completly original with the fact that the movie is based off the book of the same name, but I doubt that everyone who saw the movie also read the book. It's a shame to see a great movie like "Shutter Island" receive only ok reviews instead of the praise that I would expect a Martin Scorsese movie would receive. It's definetly not one of the greatest movies of all time, but you just have to appreciate the effort Scorsese and DiCaprio put into this project just a little bit.
The movie takes place on an island known as Shutter Island. It homes to a mental asylum for the criminally insane.Leo plays Marshall Teddy Daniels, who is sent to the island to investigate the disappearance of a patient. No one knows how she could've escaped."It's as if she evaporated straight through the walls", one character says. All of this is very puzzling to Teddy. How could've she escaped without anyone knowing or seeing her? His partner then asks him if he was sent for a reason other than the disappearance of the patient.Could he have been sent to the island just to become another patient on Shutter Island?
That and the unbelievably shocking ending I shall not spoil for you. That's probably why some people disliked it, because the ending is too confusing.Pay attention to the movie or see it again if you want to fully understand.I saw the movie in theaters and I was pretty lost. When I bought it on dvd, I liked it even more because I actually got more out of it.There's a lot to like in "Shutter Island".One of them is the performances.Leonardo DiCaprio gives, what I think, one of his very best performances and truly one of the best of the year.Jackie Earl Hayley ( "Watchmen") gives a rather haunting yet memorable performance as one of the most deranged patients on the island. If only he were in the movie for more than 5 minutes. There's the great roles and the story really keeps you interested with it's turns and unbelievable twist at the end.The film is rich in dialogue, but the actors do such a good job in their roles that they manage to keep you entertained even though their conversations go on for minutes.I think this is a great film, no matter what anyone else may say.If you like movies that play with your mind, then "Shutter Island" will rock your mind untill it's nothing but mush, and I mean that as a compliament.
