Same old Robert Rodriguez, same old action movie.

Robert Rodriguez has made some pretty darn good movies in his carrer, his best one being "Machete".Does "Once Upon A Time In Mexico" rank up with his best work? I think not. While the film itself is entertaining, I wanted to like it more.It doesn't have that feeling we felt while watching "Machete" and it doesn't have a sense of fun that made "Planet Terror" so much fun.The actors definetly did their roles right.Johnney Depp hits the nail right on the head with his performance.Antonio Banderas is good, but he's no Johnny Depp. The female characters are attractive, but that's about it.Rodriguez made his female actors in "Machete" and "Planet Terror" attractive and made it so they were really interesting, but we don't get much of that here.Danny Trejo definetly gives the goods and Willem Dafoe, although doesn't deliver much as a spanish man, still manages to entertain. If only I could say the same thing for the story. It's definetly not a bad story, but the problem is that it was the characters I was into, not the plot. There are some cool things that happen in the movie, but my eyes were on the effect, not the cause. My interest in the story is pretty much the only complaint i have with "Once Upon A Time In Mexico".Everything else is good. The action scenes deliver, despite the cheesy effect when someone gets shot and sparks fly out of their chest. There are about 2 or 3 memorable action scenes in this movie, the rest is pretty much someone either getting shot or something blowing up, so don't expect action sequences that will blow your mind. Then again, the movie came out in 2002, so there's really no one to blame.Overall, "Once Upon A Time In Mexico" delivers the goods, even though there wasn't enough goods to call it a great Rodriguez picture.Check it out.
